I sleep with a red blanket and it basically shreds onto tiny red pieces of lint throught my clothes and my hair. Is there anyway to wash it, so that it does not spread?

You can buy a battery-operated lint shaver, or simply take an inexpenvise disposable razor (single blade) and gently stroke the blanket... you will see huge mats of lint coming off! There's also something called a sweater stone, which is basically a block of pumice, that is pretty effective, but tends to leave behind little black crumbles.
