We have had our pug for about 3 months now. He is about 18 months old. We have noticed little hairs here and there, but this week he is shedding like a crazy man! I was brushing him in the light from the front door and the hair was just falling off. I have read that these dogs shed, which is fine, just more cleaning, but I just wanted any suggestions from PUG People as to what has worked. He eats IAMS? and I recently switched him to the smaller bite size pieces. Do you think that could have contributed to it?
Question for PUG OWNERS about shedding......?
Iams is a terrible food, so that's not going to help.
Get your pug groomed professionally. It won't cost you much, and groomers have tools and products to reduce shedding. It won't stop the shedding, but it will cut down on it for while. Plus, you'll get his ears cleaned, toenails cut and anal glands expressed (not all groomers do this though) while he is there!
EDIT: Iams and Eukanuba are the same. Science Diet is the worst food out there. Vets get it for free so they try to get you to buy it. If you read the ingredients, they are scary! I see more dogs with skin and coat issues on these three foods than any other.
Look for a feed store or pet supply store near you. There are many many others out there that are better. Innova, California Natural, Solid Gold, Merrick, even Nutro is a better food than those, and you can find that in many places.
Question for PUG OWNERS about shedding......?
I heard that the black pugs shed less than the fawn ones do cause they have a single coat instead of a double coat. Not sure if dog food contributes to it or not. I have been looking for a black pug for sometime now and not found the one just right for my family just yet. I have a smooth coat jack russell now and I bathe her weekly and it cuts down on shedding. Hope that helps.

Get used to it.Put a towel on the furniture and shake it out frequently. Those hair will penetrate anything. If you have AC or Forced Air Heat you will have to change the Air filter on thecold air return at least once a month. They are like all lovable creatures on this earth,we all have our quirks.
Question for PUG OWNERS about shedding......?
Get him off of the Iams... not a great food at all and could cause more shedding.
Look for food without corn, wheat or soy and no grains for the best food you can feed your dog for both physical and behavioral health.

Question for PUG OWNERS about shedding......?
My two pugs participate in spontaneous shedding as well. It seems like they don't shed much at all for a few weeks and then BAM - it all falls off. Maybe has something to do with the weather? Anyways, I just brush them often and feed them a good food (Iams is NOT a good food - www.dogfoodanalysis.com) and take them to the groomers occassionally. Otherwise, there's not much you can do - they are just dogs that shed a lot.
If you have a pug with a double coat, invest in an undercoat brush - that's where all the dead hairs that fall off usually are. Use the undercoat brush first (I recommend outside - the hairs go everywhere) then follow that up with a slicker brush for the top coat.

My daughter feeds her pug puppy only EUKANUBA.
He sheds.

Introduce your pug to a good vacuum cleaner :). I use a Furminator brush on my pug twice a week, that seems to help loads. Hopefully your carpet matches your pug in color, %26amp; you might like beige colored furniture(!)
